Why don't astronauts get hurt by space debris?
We have just visited the National Space Centre and one of the displays showed what happens when a space ship is hit by some of the thousands of tiny particles of debris which are hurtling through space several times faster than a bullet. A piece of alloy was peppered with holes and a 1 inch thick glass window had a big chunk missing from an imact with something not much more than a speck.So what stops astronauts being seriously injured when they go outside the space craft ? Judging by the damage to the objects on display the best bullet proof vest wouldn't be up to the job.
Good question. The answer is simply a matter of statistical probabilities. Sure there are thousands of bits of debris, but there are tens of millions of cubic miles of space just in the volume of space where satellites orbit and astronauts go. And they're out there only for a few hours, so one astronaut, statistically, has much less chance of getting hit than thousands of objects that have been out there for up to 50 years.
That said, you call attention to a very real danger. With thousands of hours of exposure over the years, it is very possible, if not likely, that an astronaut will experience a collision. Or worse, an occupied spacecraft will take a destructive hit from a piece of debris -- man-made or natural -- large enough to wreck the craft.

How do you know when you have had TOO MUCH to drink?
I went to a party. And I was definitely drunk. I drank 90 proof Parrot Bay with sprite first. It was a big glass of it. Probably a bit more than a pint. And then I played beer pong with parrot bay first and then with beer. I was not to the point of falling yet but I definitely was seeing double and couldn't walk straight. I stopped there for the night because people said I needed a break. haha. Could I have gone more without getting alcohol poisoning? Where is the line drawn for too much? And don't tell me to not drink. I don't party every week. Maybe like once a month or less. So just chill out if you are about to preach to me. Thank you in advance
