Rack Bow
What bike rack for my 2004 Civic?
I have a 2004 Honda Civic Coupe. I would like a bike rack that will hold at least 2 bikes. I don't want a roof rack, but am nervous about a trunk rack messing up my trunk (I've seen a trunk bike rack bend a car's truck so that it was bowed in the middle). Does anyone have any suggestions of a good trunk rack that won't mess up my car? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
Most people I know who have the Saris racks like them. But, every trunk rack has the potential to scratch up your car. I recently bought a Toyota Camry and opted for a hitch rack. I got a Class 2 hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. Almost all hitch racks will fit this receiver. A hitch rack will keep your bike away from the car. Most will have 3 attachment points (2 on the top tube, one on the seat tube) to keep the bike from swaying. This is good for both the bike and the car.
I bought a 4 bike rack but have never had a need to put more than 3 on it at a time. The rack I bought was about $125 on sale at Performance. The hitch was about $240, including installation. You can probably beat the price for the hitch.
