Besides taking a class what can I do to help my family if someone was ever to come into the house with a gun? Do you know of any good books or videos? Since I am the only male in the house its up to me . I do live in a safe neighborhood but you never know what could happened BTW I am 17.
If you are asking for an system that will teach gun defenses, Krav Maga is for you. Of course, a firearm is the safest for you and has a large intimidation factor (many criminals would rather not face an armed home-owner). In a home invasion situation a shotgun with moderately wide spread is your best bet since most invasions occur at night so aiming is going to be extremely difficult, not to mention the average person cannot effectively aim a gun in a high stress situation. If you are looking for a book, try Complete Krav Maga by Levin and Whitman, it has defenses for both handguns and rifles. A book can only help you so much, however, and you really need to practice the techniques to be able to use them effectively. If there is no Krav Maga training center near you, get the book, a friend, and a water pistol and practice (safely) in your backyard, it will be better than nothing.
