Safe Digital Lock I am looking for information on salvaging data on hard drives than are dead or near dying .?
I have two Western Digital hard drives ( 120 gig & 100 gig ) that are in trouble , to say the least . Both contain personal pictures and music only and it would take almost an eternity to replace so I am hoping to save my files and hopefully transfer then to a safer location . I have heard of a few recovery software applications but have never used them and so if any one can offer assistance in this area , I would be most grateful . This is what I have , I am having difficulty in getting the system to recognize the disk when I put it in as a slave along with my existing hard drive which is smaller as master . Alone , it appears as a drive but has no operating system and so is useless . The noises coming from it are getting gradually worse and so I am getting nervous that it may lock . Also , is it possible to retrieve information from a drive that has died, completely and cannot be detected ? Many Thanks !
The best way to get information off a drive like that is not to connect it to a computer until you are absolutely ready to move the information off the drives. If you have them connected it is still spinning the platters even if you are not accessing the drives. So its possible to lock them up and kill em just by having them connected.
There are a lot of tools out there for recovering data, but none of them really work any better then good ol' fashion dos. If you have a dos boot disk use it... boot to dos with one of the bad hard drives and good hard drive connected o the system, then move all the information over that way. If you try to boot to either one you can cause more damage and loose more information, so it is important to boot to a dos disk that uses as little space as possible in memory and as little chance as possible for the disks to be accessed unless moving data.
Then repeat the above with the second hard drive.

PS: DO NOT FREEZE THE DRIVES! Lowering the temperature causes condensation in the drives, this will lead to more of a chance of the drives failing before you get the information off them. I cannot get my point across enough of how bad an idea it is to freeze the drives.

How can I break into my lockbox/safe?
Okay, I am not trying to figure out how to do this so a can rob people i really need to know haha. I have a Honeywell lockbox with a digital code opener and also a key opener. the batteries of the digital code went dead and can only be changed through the inside of the box which is locked. i have the key, but after you turn the key you also have to turn another lock (similar to a deadbolt lock) to open it. The deadbolt lock is broken and the box will not open. I have pryed off the the deadbolt knob and everythng an cannot figure out how to open it. I really need help on how to get the lock open. PLEASE DO NOT SAY TO TAKE IT TO A LOCKSMITH BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO.
