Safe Fire Liner
Will missing tiles in my chimney liner pose any fire hazard to my home?
I have a two story home built in 1967. I have a fireplace. Last winter I had the fireplace swept out and the technicians said there were a few tiles missing from the inside of the chimney liner. They thus said it was not safe to use. They quoted me about $2000 for a new liner.
Question is: if I use my fireplace will the missing tiles pose any fire hazard to my home? The fireplace and chimney are built and surrounded with cinder blocks. I'm not a fireplace tech but I don't see any hazard. Also don't see any way carbonmonoxide could leak through the solid blocks and through the walls into my home.

Check the NFPA 211 for info regarding flues. It is a standard developed by and recognized by an international group of professional engineers and industry leaders.It specifically calls for ALL flues to be relined when the original flue has a defect. It also calls for ALL chimneys to be waterproof. I hope you don't use it without correcting ALL your chimneys issues. Otherwise your playing with FIRE!!!

Is it safe to cook a can of soup on top of the stove/fire?
That is, if you slightly open the can? Is there any plastic liner inside? I've been doing this for weeks on top of our wood stove, and then holding the can of soup with mittens.
,I think we all did this when starting out. Don't bring the temperature up to high because there is still a galvanized coating inside the soup can.
In the case of tomato soup, because of the acid content it is coated with either lacquer or plastic.
You can buy a cheap pot for about 2 or 3 dollars or even pick up one for a dollar at a yard sale. Why take the chance, worst, case get a pot to boil water in and put the soup can in the boiling water. This way as long as there is water in the the pot you know you are not applying heat past the critical point.
