Safe Lock Can
Is it safe & legal to put a lock on a breaker switch?
I live in an apartment and noticed that two of the switches in the breaker box are locked with a small screw. It can be taken off with a screw driver but I was wondering if this is safe. I'm no electrician but to my knowledge the whole purpose of the switch is to cut the electricity in case of an over charge. I guess the putting a lock to the switch will then force it to burn the fuse and then cut the electricity instead of switching to off, but is this legal? or Is it even safe?

the handles of all breakers I know of are "trip free", meaning that the breaker will perform its function regardless of what is done with the handle.The breaker will trip free of the handle and the handle will have to be moved to the off position before you can re-close the breaker. In this case, the locking screws would have to be removed to allow that
