Safe Lock Digital Damaged Homeland Security Gun Safe?
I just shipped in a used safe. It came damaged. The front handles were broken off. It has a digital lock. The combo does not work. Is there anyway to tell if the safety mechanism engaged were I cannot open the safe anymore unless I get somebody to drill it?
No way to know for sure without seeing it. If it was damaged so bad that the front handles were broken off on arrival, it's quite possible the door tumblers tripped and there will be no way to open it up without a Locksmith. It should have been "insured" when it was shipped. If that's the case the insurance for the shipping should cover the cost of any repairs...I would contact Homeland and see what they have to say..even though you bought it used.If you reach a dead-end than try a local Locksmith/Safesmith....Good Luck!

How can I encrypt an external hard drive completely, not just individual files?
I travel with a Western Digital external hard drive. Is there a, preferably free, program that will allow me to lock/encrypt the hard drive with a password; I do not want to have to keep encrypting each file. Too many passwords to remember. If there is, how safe is the encryption?
Use a free open source program called TrueCrypt, http://www.truecrypt.org/.
It can encrypt an entire drive for you and you can choose the level of encryption you require. There's not really any need to go for a super high level of encryption unless you are expecting the FBI and Aliens to try and crack your disk.
