Things to Consider When Purchasing a Home Safe
Most everyone has some type of valuable that should be kept some place safe. From jewelry to coin collections to important paperwork and more a home safe can be very handy for storing valuable possessions. On the search for the perfect safe for your home you will find an abundant of choices available. Here is a look at some features that you should consider high priority when choosing a safe for your home.
Home safes offer different types of protection. The main choice consumers have is whether to choose a fire proof safe, a burglar proof safe or one that protects from both. Of course within each option there are different degrees of security levels to decide on.
To find the best fire proof safe on the market you will want to find one that is tested by Underwriter Laboratories also known as UL. They rate different safe models for fire protection, depending on how long the safe can withstand a fire and at what temperature. They have categorized tested safes into classes. Class C can withstand fire for one hour at temperatures up to 1700 degrees, class B can withstand fire for up to two hours and 1850 degrees and class A can withstand fire for up to four hours at a temperature of 4000 degrees.
Most homeowners can choose the cheapest of the three options a class C safe with confidence. If however, you live in a rural area that is far from a fire department you may want to spend the extra money for longer protection. Also, if you live in an area that is prone to brush fires you will want to seriously consider the Class A safe.
Safes that protect against burglary are also rated for levels of protection. If you are looking to protect valuables against burglary you will want to choose once again one that is tested by Underwriter Laboratories. In order to receive a UL rating, the safes must go through a series of tests by professional safe hackers using a variety of tools and means to break into the safe.
Burglar resistant safes are made of solid metal with heavy doors that are built to be resistant to drilling. Three of the most common household safes are the rated TL-15, TL-30 and TL-40. All of the safes are resistant to tampering from tools such as drills, picking tools and tools that apply pressure for 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 4o minutes respectfully.
If you are looking to protect against fire and theft you will need to look for a safe that has both a fire and theft rating. Be prepared to spend more money for a safe that provides both protections.
There are some other things to consider when purchasing a safe. Deciding what you will be storing in it will be important. Depending on what you plan to store in it will help you determine the size and shape. There are also a variety of options when it comes to locking your safe including a key operation, combination lock or electronic lock.
