Safe Protect All
What are some things I can do to make my pc safe without using up all my memory?
I have about 250 megs to play with and everytime I load a program like mozilla or others the machine is so slow I just want to cry. Getting a newer C is not an option. When this one finally crashes I will be forced to drop my efforts to better myself and my family. What simple safeguards or setting can I make in IE so that the PC is protected but the memory isn't affected?
use a security suite.
i sugget you use OUTPOST SECURITY SUITE. one of the best security softwares in the market outmatching norton and mcafee and all those apps who promises the imposible which only outpost can do and it has proven to be very efficient
it will only eat up 45mb of ur hd and a few of your ram
or try using the best firewall application
comodo firewall.dont worry comodo is FREE and it can really fend out malwares

Does Norton AntiVirus 2009 protect against all kinds of viruses?
I went on a site i know is safe and my computer freaked out and said i had a bunch of viruses so i looked at what it was and it said i have a bunch of trojans and crap....but mostly trojans. i decided to do the norton antivirus scan and its almost done and it has no viruses detected at all. will antivirus 2009 protect against them all if i restart my computer or at all?
There are many categories of computer malware.
1.) Viruses - these require human interaction - you have to click on something to get infected.
2.) Worms - these are totally automatic. They spread all by themselves.
3.) Trojan Horses - just like the Greek story, they seem harmless, but actually mask a virus or some other crap. You click on the innocent looking link, and the underlying problem (the virus) is let loose.
When it comes to AV protection (regardless of the vendor), they detect viruses and worms and to an extent trojan horses. However, they only detect against viruses that are known. They can't do much about a carefully crafted virus when a detection method hasn't been discovered yet. This is why un-updated virus protection is worse than non at all - it lulls you into a false sense of security.
Compounding this, some programs that the average person would consider a virus are actually programs the user agreed to install. They get on systems because people just click next with abandon without knowing whats actually going to happen.
Try actually reading a license agreement sometime... Clauses like "You agree to allow us to alter this agreement without notification at any time" (so we can potentially give ourselves the right to make changes to your system in the future that you wouldn't agree to now) are an example of what gets you into trouble.
Also - adware. Users find it annoying.... but if you went through the trouble of downloading an application that seems useful and then find out it does things you don't want it to do, who is to blame?
For this reason, often, vendors don't classify things as malware when common sense says it is. This is because from a legal and from a technical standpoint it isn't a virus. For an AV vendor to classify it as such can get then sued.
So what you say? Classify it as a virus anyway you say? Well, the AV vendors don't work for you - they work for their shareholders and the shareholders would rather see you get screwed by bad classifications than see themselves get screwed by reduced profits. As long as we keep buying, its more profitable to avoid getting sued over classifying things in a way that aligns with common sense.
As far as Norton is concerned, it is on enough machines, that viruses and other such things are designed to turn the protection off, again leaving you with a false sense of security.
Personally, I don't care for Norton - way too bloated and it costs money for home use. Why do that when there are better options that are free for home use, aren't as bloated, don't slow the system down as much and aren't (currently) targeted specifically by virus writers?
One recommendation is Avast!. I've used it for years and never had a problem.
Then again, Avast! hasn't caught anything either.
Think of it this way. If you went to the Amazon jungle and had a malaria vaccination before the trip, does that mean that you can run around Cart Blanche without to worry about any other dangers such as insect bites, drowning, pythons, a local civil war, crocodiles, piranha, etc.,...?
Of course not. The same is true for your computer. Antivirus isn't a panacea that will save you from everything and it doesn't free you to be naive or do anything you want without consequence.
Last thing: how do you KNOW the site you visited is safe? Major, trusted sites get hacked all the time for the purpose of hosting malware. Again - do you KNOW the site is safe or are you assuming it is safe? Everyone, at one time KNEW Thalidomide was safe - it wouldn't have been prescribed if it wasn't right? Everyone KNEW the Ford Pinto was safe - it wouldn't have made it to market otherwise right?
... Then babies were born with severe defects and cars started exploding. How could this be? Everyone KNEW they were safe!
There is no way to PROVE something is safe. Only to prove that it isn't. Just because something bad hasn't happened YET doesn't mean it won't happen in the future - sort of like the site that has never done you wrong in the past seems to have done you wrong in your story.
