Safe Rock
I would like to know if my savings are safe with northern rock?
would it be advisable to put them into something like National Savings for the time being.
Yes they should be. Even if bank goes down the tubes something like 90% of the first £28K is gauranteed.
It doesn't seem to be going to go down the tubes - it's just a temporary bi-product of the morgage crisis in that it is suffering from the lack of credit available to it/

How safe is the area around the Hard Rock Chicago, esp. after dark?
I'm going to be staying at the Hard Rock in Chicago (230 N Michigan Ave) for a few days and, as I've never been to Chicago, much less this specific area, I'm curious about the relative safety of the region.
Also, as the days are getting shorter, I do plan on being out, at least to eat, after dark and would like to know where to stick to and avoid.

You could walk around that area 24/7 and be completely safe.
1. You're on Michigan Ave. The only area of Michigan Ave. that is not safe starts about 2 miles south of where you're at.
2. You're in the Loop just south of the River & again on Michigan Ave. I don't think there is a more safe area in Chicago. Heavy traffic, cops, cabs, buses, people walking around at all hours...
So yeah, don't worry about your safety at the Hard Rock Hotel or anywhere in the Loop that's not an alley.
