Safe Wheels
Is it safe to use hexagonal base wheel nuts in tapered wheel nut holes?
I had to put wheel nuts with a hexagon base in the tapered wheel nut holes, which cut into the taper a little bit. Will it be safe to continue using these wheel nuts or should I find tapered nuts that fit?
And also, since I cut a circle around halfway down the tapered holes, will this make any difference to the safety of the rim?
not a good thing to do.the taper is to help center the rim when you tighten up the right lug nuts.the lug nuts you are using are just biting into the rim and not actually tightening properly.on top of the rim is not centered right.so i would not even drive the car til you get the right lugs.

I recently had my car totaled with State Farm, is it okay to replace the wheels and radio before its towed?
I recently totaled a 98 honda for approximately 5400. The inspector has already reviewed the vehicle and I assume detailed all the available parts on it.
What do you think, would it be safe to pull the stereo and replace the custom alloy wheels with something cheap?
No, they'll see the difference when the vehicle gets to auction. They have photos of the wheels and stereo, and what you are asking about qualifies as fraud. Realistically they'll just make an adjustment, but they could sick the SIU guys on you, and make life difficult. If you want the stuff, call the adjuster and ask him if you can take it, and how much the adjustment will be. If you have nice stuff it may be worth it, things like cd players usually only add $75 to the value.
