I think you could make this more readable if you broke it up into shorter paragraphs. I kind of like some of the points you're making, when I struggle through your prose to understand them.
I think the problem with voting for "one of those crazy 3rd or 4ths" is that actually, nothing much does happen when we do this. I've voted for 3rd parties in the past and it never seemed to do any good, at least not at the national level, and I don't think it's going to work now.
However, maybe voting for 3rd parties at the local level, in carefully targeted local races, might work for some people, in some locales. And if a good 3rd party can garner support and actually win a few races at the local level, maybe it can then advance to running candidates in a few state level races — and then, after many, many years, it might make a try for success in the national elections.
But right now, I'm afraid the Dems and Reps have an effective monopoly on American elections. Not saying I like this, but I think that's how it is.
