Why does it cost so much to keep young offenders in jail/secure unit?
How come it takes over £200,000 a year to keep EACH young offender in secure unit for a year? If you went to the 7 star Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, you wouldn't have to pay that much. All you need is bars on the doors and windows, a few cheap meals a day and some security personel to make sure they behave....how can that cost £4,000 a day for EACH little bastard?
It also costs £35,000 + to keep each prisoner in jail...why? I'm sure it could be done MUCH more cheaply.
Musician...maybe so....but how can it possibly cost that much....if they had caviar and champagne every day it wouldn't be anywhere approaching that expensive!

Securing patio sliding glass doors?
I have sliding glass doors in which both panels open. I can put a charley bar on the inside, but how do I secure the other panel? If I put a bar on the other panel, it would have to be outside and that provides no security.
Any suggestions? The side we use is the panel that would need the bar placed outside. The other panel is broken and we plan on putting some screws in it so it cannot open. Our landlord does not want to replace the doors, so that is not an option.
I want to reinforce the one I voted as best answer. The layout you have with the sliding door outside is totally improper and under most city codes violates a requirement for safe habitation. You are supposed to be able to secure your property - for example, landlords in my state are required to install not only regular deadbolts but single sided with only a handle on the inside so you can lock out an angry boyfriend who has a key.
If you do not have this protection, two holes drilled through the frames where they overlap, one high and one low, will help secure them. Hardware stores with door lock hardware will sell pins with rings to pull and chains to retain them.
You can use a "charlie bar" by screwing a block or bracket to the bottom of the outside door near the opening so that a bar laid in the groove will block between the edge of the inside door and the block/bracket preventing the outside door from moving.
