How do I file a formal complaint against a federal DHS officer?
I was recently at an event in Tacoma, Washington where security was provided by officers of the US Department of Homeland Security. I feel as though I was harassed by one of the officers. At the end of the event I asked the officer for his badge number and after much hesitation he gave me that information. I was wondering how I would go about filing a formal complaint against this officer.
No they were in charge of the security of the event. It was at a federal building that was rented out and the Homeland officer was in charge of the security.
?? Since when does Homeland Security provide security services? They may have been present, but I don't think they were 'providing security'.

Why doesn't the public respect mall security officers?
I feel that the reason is mainly b/c of the uniform. The uniform, badge, and all the other credentials represents you as the authority figure and the public does not like authority figures, no one likes being told what to do. Could the reason be that Hollywood has brainwashed the younger generation to hate and laugh at mall security? I believe mall security deserves respect b/c they are the people that you would go to if something happens and are the 1st responders. They work for petty wages in high risk situations.
I agree with you. I think the public has an ingrained image of mall security officers as wanna-be cops who abuse the limited authority they have. There are some who fit that description, but they are in the minority. I also think that some people resent the fact that someone with no formal police training and without the full authority of a policeman can tell them what to do. They don't have the stones to mouth off to a real cop, so they take it out on some guy who's just doing his job. It makes them feel tough.

This is something I wish more people realized, and I am tickled pink to be able to tell you about it. Yes, the tickets may say they can remove you for any reason, but it does not prevent them from being sued for discriminatory conduct. This is really a moot point, since sexual orientation is not considered a protected class in most jurisdictions. But let us examine the hypothetical of a black man and a white woman being asked to leave for kissing. Do they have a lawsuit? You betcha! They would indeed have to prove that they were being asked to leave because of discrimination against inter-racial relationships, which would be a difficult task as the security officer could make up a slew of reasons for removing them. This is a major reason we need to add sexual orientation as a protected class nationally, in all jurisdictions. But I guess my point is, just because a contract states something, does not mean you cannot fight it as illegal! Have a great day.
