Biometrics vs. Privacy? Your opinion?
Biometrics are a great way to protect valuable data and provide security, but do they cross a line? Are some methods an invasion of a person's privacy? Would you be willing to provide fingerprints, retina scans, vein scans, etc for access to company materials?
I'm curious to hear others' opinions.
for me, it only crosses the line when my biometric features are used beyond where they are supposedly used for, like for security of the company Im working for. If it is used for something else, then that could mean a lawsuit.
the companies we are working for have the right to implement such security as they deem fit. if you think you are being violated, there's only one option, quit. we really cant do anything about this, we are at the mercy of the govt we are in... if the govt find it legal to use certain security measures, then that's it... I guess the best way to protect ourselves is knowing what and how much they are requiring us to give and the implications attached to it.

How To Protect Your Valuables From Burglars
Need some info about how to secure a house in the long term?
Hi, i currently own a house 10,000 miles away from my native country and i need to find a cheap way to monitor that the house is doing well and that everything is ok.
The house i want to protect is pretty big and i had some flooding problems in the basement time ago, so i basically want to go there this summer, sell as much stuff as i can from inside, install a good system or hire a company to check my house and i might come back in a year.
I've seen some websites, I'm not sure if it's more convenient to have some security cameras, monitor them from where i live and if something looks wrong just ask a friend to check out my house, however there are also security companies that monitor alarms and cameras so i don't know, my budget for the system is 1,500$ and for an annual fee of max. 500$
since I'm selling off most of the valuable things inside i just want to make sure that nobody gets inside and steals stuff like furniture or some homeless breaks inside and so on

Im glad to see your willing to spend around $1500 I know so often I see people who want everything for nothing. I would suggest spending a little more and get a DVR and cameras that you can connect to over the internet with you phone or laptop that don't require a subscription fee.
Good news: if you get a good DVR you don'y need to subscribe to any service except internet.
If you get good CCTV products its to easy do and to install yourself (or get an electrician to do wiring)
For outdoor you will probably want IR cameras that have a varifocal lens so you can see at night as well adjust the view to capture what you want to see.
DVR: Digital Video Recording:
Thats for cameras then next thing you will need is a DVR, a DVR (digital video recorder) is the brains behind a CCTV system it takes the images from the cameras and allows you to view, search, remote connect, backup and only record when there is motion or if an alarm is triggered.
Get a Demo before you get a DVR:
many DVR say they offer these features but they don't often work if you are interested in remotely viewing your cameras make sure you get a demo to verify it works any manufacture with good products will be more then happy to give you an online demo.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVR’s on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.
The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.
If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use,

Outdoor IR cameras:
cheap IR cameras from a non brand name you most likely wasted your money,
Cheap IR cameras are standard cameras with $4 IR LED's on them, these cameras were not designed to works with IR and they don't. A good IR camera are very complex and use special filters, optics, CCD, EPC and PCB that sync the camera with IR illumination for accurate illumination that eliminates over and under exposure.
There are only about 3 companies I trust for IR cameras.
Extreme CCTV, (Bosch) Peclo and Ascendent Technology Group.
The Best is Ascendent but they are harder to find as there a smaller company but they do offer better products and are actually cheaper. They supply IR cameras for military, and boarder security an offer thermal up to 40km and Active IR up to 8km. So there 500ft and bellow is amazing. They just released an economical line and have great sales on now so its a good time to save some money while getting a great system.
Bright Lights and difficult ambient lighting: (such as parking lots, entrances, and low light)
Most cameras cant handle bright light, stark contrast or deep shadows.
to cope with difficult ambient lighting and glare you need professional cameras and not the kind you buy online.

Note: IR camera will not work through windows
If you are investing in good cameras you also want to get a good DVR as well.
In the end you want to buy your DVR from a Brand name DVR manufacture
Buy a Brand name product: Not ones that are sold on ebay, amazon and other online stores:
These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.
