Security Safe Burglar
How do I reassure myself that I am safe after a break in?
Last night, I came home to find my back door had been kicked in and my house had been robbed. I have a high privacy fence and a large dog (the burglar(s) fed him celery to keep him from attacking???????). I felt that those were deterrents that would keep my home safe, and I am reeling from the rude awakening.
I know that people feel very violated after a break in and it can take a long time to feel safe again. I am a single mom with a little girl, and I need to feel safe and know that she is protected. My landlord is installing an alarm system tomorrow, and my dog is going to security training (celery??? REALLY????) ASAP.
Could others who have been through this offer any advice to help get back to a rational sense of security and confidence that can and will be safe again?
aww im sorry to hear about having a break in :..
you just need to know you have plenty of people around you;
make sure all your doors are locked before you go out, and maybe get some padlock on the gate if you have one.
Make sure you keep all valubles away from the windows or view..
and the security system will help,
you can also "fake" that you have a webcam in the window.. that is what my dad does so burglars think my dad has them on webcam, you cud really have it done or just a fake one, (as my dads doesnt work)
also you could have a sign saying your house is protected, as this is a threat to burglars,
also you could have a sensor light, so others could see if they were attempting to break in
a small dog will "yap" alot, and also scare them off!

What can I do to feel safer in my house at night?
I feel terribly on edge when I'm in the house on my own. My boyfriend works nights one week in three and I hate it! Every bump, I'm up, checking someone's not in the garden.
We have a burglar alarm, but obviously I can't set it if I want to go downstairs and even if it went off, no one would come because they're always going off randomly!
Any ideas? Either security or how I can convince myself it's no different to my boyfriend being home?
I have security lights in both the front and back but feel guilty leaving them on cos they're really bright! LOL I'm just a big chicken
If you live in an unsafe neighbourhood, then I think the police would come round your house for free and give recommendations to see how you can improve security. This might include: a gate, good lighting including automatic floodlights outside, panic buttons, mortise locks, window locks etc. Also planting a bush with thorns or sharp leaves can help. Putting gravel around your house to stop people walking around etc. When I was growing up in Brasil (pretty violent) we had a dog. He really helped us. We also had glass on the wall but that probably isn't allowed in this country.
If you live in a safe neighbourhood according to an objective person's viewpoint then maybe your fears are without reason. I would look then at what experiences you had earlier in life or in the last year to make you feel this way. It could also be a stage you're going through e.g. hormones, antibiotics etc making you feel strange. Finally, it's worth having friends over often, whether for security or not!
