Self Install Burglar
Can i self monitor an adt alarm system?

We just purchased a home that has an adt system installed. I called to see the cost of activating & she said it will be $40 a month since we do not have a phone line. I thought about buying a self installed alarm that just chimes when someone breaks in since that is the true thing that really scares burglars anyway. Then i wondered can i set my current adt alarm to do this & not use there monitoring service. Just use there system which is already installed?

You can use the system that is there now without the monitoring service.
You don't need to have it monitored. You will find somewhere in the house a sound horn on the outside of the house.
You will need to program in your alarm code that you want to use.
I did the same in my home.

Do It Yourself Home Security vs. Professional Installation

<!-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->

Do It Yourself home security systems have become all the range in the last couple of years. Although there are significant cost savings and advantages to installing your own home security system, there are some important considerations as well. Doing some research and weighing the benefits and problems with self-installation will help you make the best decision for protecting your home and your family.

First of all, its important to realize what makes a home security system function properly. One is, of course, the installation. Years ago, it used to be necessary to have a professional install your system. This was important because most systems had to be physically wired. Especially in existing homes, this meant going into walls, running new wire, and connecting it all to a phone system. Today, much of this work isn't necessary due to advances in wireless technology within the home. Even so, there are some important things that an installer can accomplish that you simply can't.

For one, an installer can often securely connect your system to a phone line. By making a tie-in outside the box in a secure location (and potentially securing the box itself), it makes it more difficult for a burglar to cut your phone lines during a break-in. This type of security is free with an installer, but can be complicated during a home install. Second, an installer can often more securely install the security devices themselves. Having door and window sensors effectively secured and installed can be a huge help in preventing false alarms. Finally, its important to consider what you'll do if something breaks and constantly causes false alarms. With a professional installer and a home alarm company – you can call someone and that person becomes responsible for the problem.

Another huge part of home security (besides the obvious benefits of protecting your home and family) is the cost savings that come with homeowners insurance. Depending on what area of the country you live in, this discount can be upwards of 20%. It's a huge difference when you're thinking about installing a system. Its important to note, however, that these discounts seldom apply without monitoring services. Since most do-it-yourself home alarm systems simply dial friends, neighbors, or relatives – this does not qualify as monitoring. As such, you may not qualify for a discount.

Regardless of whether or not you choose to have a professional installer put in your home alarm system, or you choose to take the plunge and do it yourself, a home security system is a great investment. It protects your family, increases the resale value of your home, and can easily bring down your insurance deductibles. But whatever you do – remember to turn your security system on when you leave! Many people don't, and its crucial to remind yourself that your investment only makes sense when the system is armed.
