Shackle Combination
Are the methods of hacking locks on the internet videos true?
After watching videos on the internet (YouTube) on opening locks using a piece of a pop can, and sliding it into the shackle. I decided to try it myself. It looked so easy in the video, but I was unable to get the lock open even when I am precise at doing things. Are these real methods or are they like sort of set up? Other than picking or bumping, do you know a way of hacking locks, I need one of my combination lock opened?
Yes, shims are a real method of opening locks, however a simple pop can shim probably won't open a good, quality lock. If you actually need to get the lock off of something, as opposed to getting the lock open so you can reuse it, I recommend a good set of bolt cutters.

There are five steps to follow when opening a combination lock:
Turn the dial to zero.
Turn the dial to the right. Stop when you reach your first number.
Turn the dial to the left one full turn. Stop when you reach your second number.
Turn the dial to the right. Stop when you reach your third number.
Pull the shackle.
A combination lock has 40 numbers on its dial. Any number may be used more than once in the combination. When designing the lock, how many different combinations does the designer have to choose from?
A.) 400 combinations
B.) 64,000 combinations
C.) 250,000 combinations
D.) 1,200 combinations

There are three numbers in the combo (A,B,C):
A can be any number 1-40 (40 options)
B can be any number 1-40 (40 options)
C can be any number 1-40 (40 options)
So to figure it out, if the combo only had one number, there would be 40 combinations. If it had two, it would 40x40 (the 40 possibilities from the first number, then the 40 for the second), to get the third number, you take the answer of 40x40 (1600) and multiply that by 40 (the number of possibilities for the third number) - which gives you 64,000.
(If the combo had 4 numbers, you would take 64,000 and muliply that by 40)
