Will a.22lr hollowpoint fired from a Ruger 10/22 penetrate a human far enough to reach vitals?
...or will expansion make it too shallow.I mean torso hits that strike the sternum or ribs, not the magic armpit or eyeball shot.I am talking about an off the shelf 10/22, no fancy barrel or anything. I know that the 40 grain lead solids will do it,but what about a standard high velocity hollowpoint(like remington golden bullet,not CCI stinger).Lets say even a medium size animal like a deer,or a real big dog.I am not looking for theory, but real life accounts.Even if you have a story about another type of rifle(if that is all you have),but I am not asking about handguns.I said 10/22 because that is what I have,and If I had to grab it in a pinch to fend off a home invader,should i leave the round nose solids in it,or can I trust the hollowpoints?I already know that there are better guns for this,but lets stick to the question at hand(i got a 12 gauge and a .45).Thanks for your input,and please leave the ballistic gelatin at home for this one!Have at it my friends
At 10 yards which is the range of fire for most home defense situations your round is traveling at 1227 fps. with 137-140 ft lbs of energy, even a hollow point at that range can bypass a rib or sternum. It will probably disintegrate once past the rib or sternum.
The Ruger 10/22 22 LR is a good home defense rifle but I suggest you stay away from the hollow point and go to a semi wad cutter.
you'll insure penetration and you'll have the tumble effect working for you.

"Get Some Guns" store visit, Pt 2
Okay...so where the hell did all the handgun ammo go?
For weeks now I've been looking for some 9mm ammo for my Ruger. I've hit local stores as well as calling up Cabela's all with the same response which is: sorry, we're all out. Are people going into stores and buying up any and all handgun ammo they can get their hands on or what? I understand once we got a democrat into office that ammo would pretty much fly off the shelves for the first couple months until supply caught up with demand. But now it's over a half year since he got in and still the same thing. What gives? Man, I'd love to be working for Federal or Remington in the ammunition dept. Those people gotta be pulling like 2 shifts back-to-back. LOL. Thanks

After the election people went nuts, and they caught the mfgs off guard. There was also a snafu with the US Military halting the release of once-fired brass. This has been resolved. Be patient, this, like gas, will soon pass.
I went through this during the survivalist craze in the 80's.
The Soviet Union fell a few years later.
They did it again when Clinton was reelected.
The assault gun ban died.
Yeah...this too will pass.
