Small Jewelry Safes
Is having a in-home workshop with a butane torch safe?
I'm setting up tools for the vast amount of hobbies I have begun to acquire; one of them being jewelry/metal working. I have the cash for the tools, but my parents are worried about the small butane torch I wish to acquire, and using it inside a house with gas-powered AC (or something like that, I know nothing about such things). They're worried about there being a gas leak one day, causing an explosion. Our plumbing/electric/AC etc are all pretty well put together, with no real problems in my lifetime, so I don't see this happening. Is this fear really plausible?
My other option is to build an outdoors workshop, but this would require wood and a lot of other construction items I don't want to add to my bill, not to mention weather in Ohio isn't very forgiving.
I'm not a jewelry making genius, but I'm going to say no, I don't think their fear is plausible. It's not like the butane is going to be leaking out of the torch and building up. However, working with fire indoors is generally not the best idea, so you've got to make sure you take decent precautions. Make sure you're working on a non-flammable work bench- something with a metal surface. Always have a fire extinguisher close by and always have proper ventilation. I know that it's a problem using butane camping stoves indoors because it can cause a build up of carbon monoxide, which can harm you. But, if you are working in a very well ventilated area, that should not be a huge problem.
I actually found a message board where a jewelry maker started using a butane torch indoors after a scare with a propane torch leaking. http://cs.artjewelrymag.com/artcs/forums/p/16761/66873.aspx. You can find the thread there, but the gist of it is that she uses the propane outdoors and the butane indoors. Another smart thing mentioned on there is knowing how to detect a leak if it does happen. In the end, working with flammable gases there will always be a risk, but if you're educated on the equipment you're using, I think you're safe.

Robbed and Cheated in Montego Bay?
My fiance and I recently went on a two week vacation to Montego Bay, Jamaica.We booked a trip through Expedia and paid for an upgraded ocean-view suite at Royal Decameron. Upon arrival, we were told that our room was double booked, and were put in a small, shabby room with no view. We weren't put in our room that we paid for until 6 days into our trip. We didn't receive any type of refund or even an apology. We had to beg the cleaning staff to clean our room, and although we always left a tip, the cleaning lady asked if she could have some of my clothes and shoes. The second to last day of our trip we came in from the beach to find that our safe had been opened, and most of our valuables had been taken, jewelry, money,etc, and the only people with a key was the front desk. This was a horrible experience, and the Jamaican police refused to do anything, saying that it was our fault for bringing those things. Is there any legal action that we can take in the US against the resort?
