Steel Lock Gun Why are tire wheels locks made of brittle ceramic and not steel like lugnuts?
A wheel lock on my 2003 Infiniti I35 broke when I tried to loosen it, making for a very expensive flat tire repair. Did I screw up? Well, at the tire store, when trying to remove another tire, the wheel lock broke when a TIRE PROFESSIONAL tried to remove it. What's going on here?
I Googled "broken wheel lock" and, judging from the number of hits, this is not an uncommon problem. Some people blamed the previous tire repair guys for over-tightening with impact guns. Maybe the auto manufacturer warns against those devices. But come on! Impact guns have been around a lot longer than wheel locks (this is the first car I've had with them).
What I want to know is, given the torques that can be encountered, why do the manufacturers make wheel locks out of brittle ceramic instead of molding the lock nut out of the same durable steel that lugnuts are made from?

I work in a shop, I encounter 5-10 carsy per day with wheel locks. In the thounsands of wheel lock nuts and keys I have dealt with I have never seen any made from ceramic, only steel. Also except for a very few worn out keys I have never seen one simply break. Lost keys are the biggest problem I encounter.

Is the field and stream gun case TSA approved?
I have a Field&Stream gun case and I do not know the exact name. It has s steel imprint design and has two built in locks. I am not sure if it is TSA approved or not. I bought it at dicks sporting goods last year. The locks are fairly basic if that means anything.
The case should say its TSA approved. Most TSA approved cases dont have thier own built in locks, and F&S isnt known for thier high quality products (but a great magazine), so i would surmise its doubtful. Try a web search to find your model, or go to the store and see if they still have the same model, then check the tag.
Its a pain, but baggage people can destory almost anything, and you wouldnt want to trust cheapo locks or cheapo hinges and latches.
Plano pillar-Lock has got my rifle & shotguns across country with connections several times. Its not too expensive and held up well.
