What is the value of a Sterlingworth Field gun, 20 gauge, Serial # 250008, circa 1912?

Sterlingworth is the name used by A.H. fox's 'economy grade' double barreled shotguns.

That is both good and bad. A.H. Fox is considered on of about 3 'great american gun makers' and his wares have been 'rediscovered' by discerning shooters who desire to own great american firearms, rather than say a similar gun from a london gunmaker. So the name A.H. Fox is VERY valuabe.

But on the flip side you have the fact that yours is the most economy grade of all the AH Fox guns.

And of course, condition always is a big factor. In the absolute best shape, I'd estimate the gun to be worth $1000+, (some even push the $3000 mark http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=102087472 ) but if it is an old rust bucket, with a cracked stock and gouges in the wood, missing it's full fore-arm, dented barrel, it could be as low as $200

However, there was also a Sterlingworth made in Phillidelphia PA that does NOT bear the A.H. Fox name, which if that is the case, the value would be a LOT less, again, depending on condition $800-100

I don't know if A.H. Fox changed his mind or bought the plant and improved production, or if he just happened to start using the same name for his economy line, or what, but later on they did start producing 'sterlingworths' with his name on the gun Look in front of the trigger gaurd and in front of the word sterlingworth. Also look for ones made in New York, NOT in philly.

Note, many people connect the name Sterlingworth and AH Fox even when AH Fox isn't stamped on the gun. THis means you will see a lot of falsely high priced guns looking of a sucker to buy them... but it also means you could possibly find a guy who thinks he knows it is valuable and overvalues it and buys it from you for way too much. Don't count on it though.

Here is an example of a philly sterlingworth trying to ride on the fox name. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=101835670 Note that while it is a more desireable gauge and only slightly less good condition as the other, he is trying to sell it for 1/3 as much? That's because he is hoping a sucker sees his word fox next to sterlingworth on the description, but doesn't know the name needs to be stamped on the gun and for it to be a New York gun and pays about $300 more than the gun is really worth. That is a $700-800 gun only
