Versatile Handgun Gun
Most versatile handgun, shotgun and long gun?
not the most PRACTICAL just most versatile...
For handguns, I think the .44 Magnum revolver because it can be loaded with 44 specials making it great for self-defense, ok for plinking and with 44 Mags make it great for hunting/wilderness protection
For shotguns, I'd say a 12 guage pump...great for self defense, great for trap shooting and good for hunting
For rifles, I think the 5.56 nato AR-15..great for plinking, good for hunting and ok for self-defense

i hear .357 but can't the .44 mag take out larger game then the .357? Also can't the .44 mag do just as well as self defense? with 44 specials or hell 44 mags would do the job! just seems the .44 mag can play MORE roles then the .357...
For a handgun, I'd have to go with the S&W 460. It'll shoot the .45LC, .454, or the .460. You can stop just about anything in north america but still load the .45 for small game, range, or self defense (not that it would be my first choice but would be more than adequate).
Rifle, I'd have to go with a .308 on an AR10 platform. It can be loaded down for coyotes or up for deer (or bigger if needed). You have pretty decent long range weapon. The high capacity capability makes it a good choice for security of an area as well.
Shotgun would be either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870....no explanation needed there.

What is the most versatile type of ammunition?
That is, is there a type of ammunition that can fit in either a handgun or a rifle, or is easy to find, and is it expensive? I ask because I just turned eighteen, I'm feeling like buying a gun or two before the Left scraps out the second amendment, and I don't want to spend a whole crapload of money on different ammunition.
From a novice survival point of view the 22lr is hands down the most versitile and economical. $25 for a brick of 500 rounds of ammo, and the firearms are designed to typically fire 100,000 rounds in it's life time. All beginners should have a 22 rifle. All experts already have one.
Next - the 223 or the 308. Both are NATO calibers. Plenty of military surplus ammo and government surplus brass available. One piece of 223 or 308 can be reloaded up to 8 times.
Some people will harp on the virtures of SKS and AK calibers....... sure, the surplus ammo on the shelf is cheap. But is is imported, and when the importation stops the ammo is gone the next day. This ammo is also cheap because it is made with a steel case - steel cases can never, ever, be reloaded. This means if you have a SKS and 100 rounds of ammo - when the ammo is gone all you have is a club. If you had a 223/308 you can re-used the brass up to 8 times - making 100 rounds become 800 over time.
