Wall Safe Electrical Outlet
Can I "split" a 110v electrical outlet for the purpose of installing another one?
So I have an electrical outlet in my living room that I never use. I want to install an electrical outlet in the closet underneath my stairs and I could put the outlet in the exact same place on the wall, just on the "other side" so to speak. I could just cut a hole in the wall and turn the whole thing around and put the outlet on the other side, but then i'd need to cover up the original outlet spot with a plate. Ideally I'd like to just split the cords and have them both be functional? is this safe?
Please refrain from telling me I should get an electrician and whatnot, I know that, I'm asking "hypothetically" in the realm of science or whatever..
Well like you said electrician blah blah, but anyways what you would be doing there would be creating (when things were plugged into both outlets, the original and the one you split off) a parallel circuit. This is also called a "current-dividing" circuit. Say, for example, that you plug a toaster into the original socket that pulls 1 Amp of current, and that the wires in your home were (god forbid) rated at a measly 1.5 Amps. This would be perfectly safe until you plugged your other identical toaster into the "split" socket that you installed. You would now be pulling 1 Amp through each of the two leads on the toaster side of the split. Current adds in parallel!!! So before the split, you are now pulling 2 Amps through your home's wires which are only rated at 1.5 Amps holycrap! I can't guess from your question how familiar you are with any of this, so I'll go ahead and say that it's very, very bad to push 2 Amps of current through a wire that's rated at 1.5 Amps. However, you do say that you never use the original outlet, and the wires in your house are more likely than not rated at some absurdly high Amperage to avoid anything like this ever happening. What you describe would be similar to the way a regular power-strip works, which is by creating more circuits in parallel (and power-strips are almost always very safe things to use). Power-strips, however, also have mechanisms which prevent them from pulling more current than is safe, which is why they can also be called "surge protectors", and the wall-socket which you would be installing would not utilize such a mechanism. An example of an unprotected series of parallel circuits would be when one plugs in those Christmas lights that have the plugs that you can just plug another thing on to the back of them (if you know what I'm talking about?) and some people just plug like forty plugs in one after the other and then oh jeez my house is burning down on Christmas Eve! Um yeah but anyways long story short it probably wouldn't, but possibly could, be dangerous.

How Many Outlets Should I Have in Each Room?
How many outlets you should have in a room is determined by your housing electrical code. Not all housing codes are the same for all states. Generally, you need to have an outlet every six feet. This is common in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. In the kitchen and bathroom, some people require a few more electrical outlets to run all the appliances. Keep in mind that the outlets that are for living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms are placed about eighteen inches off the floor. In the kitchen and bathrooms, the outlets are placed under cabinets and behind stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators and compactors.
When deciding how many outlets you need, you must consider what you will be running in one given room. If you have a window air conditioner, you will want a separate outlet for this appliance. If you have a computer set up with a printer, computer, monitor, router and modem, you will need enough outlets to distribute power. You do not want to overload the outlet with all these things plugged in with a surge protector. Having enough outlets in a room for all the things that you need power for is going to determine how many you actually need.
If you have a living room set up away from a wall outlet. A floor outlet might be needed under tables so you can have table lamps without running extension cords to the walls further away. Before deciding on how many electrical outlets to install, check the housing codes, determine your needs, and talk with a licensed and experienced electrician to see what they recommend you can safely install in your home with your electrical panel in mind. If you have too many outlet needs and not enough open circuits, you may need a bigger panel to add additional electrical outlets.
