Wall Safe Gun Safe why are some guns regarded as more powerful than others??... doesnt the power come from the bullet?
do guns effect the damage the bullets do?? i can understand how the actual gun.. can effect accuracy, rate of fire, recoil... all that... stuff... but the power i dont understand... i seen a clip of a 50. Cal sniper shoot through a safe, wall, steel plate, umm, concrete blocks and maybe some other junk O.O... but... if you were to hit the bullet with a hammer or something i think it would go through all that stuff too... sooo... does the gun its self... actually effect the damage and power of the bullet??
If you manage to detonate a cartridge outside of a firearm, in all likelihood the the cartridge case would travel further than the bullet and neither would go very far.
A cartridge's power comes neither from the gun, the cartridge case, or the bullet. The power is derived from the gases produced by the burning gunpowder.
If the gases are not confined and directed by the barrel they spread in all directions and do little or nothing to propel the bullet. In face in many, if not all, cases a cartridge detonated in a fire will see the bullet remaining in the fire while the cartridge case goes flying off like a bottle rocket, or the case ruptures throwing brass fragments hither and yon while leaving the bullet in its original position.
I can remember an incident many years ago when a friend had half a dozen shotgun shells explode in his coat pocket, he fell asleep near a campfire. The coat was not badly damaged and the person was not injured at all.
Without cartridges, firearms are nothing but expensive clubs. And without firearms, cartridges are less useless than a good rock.
Firearms of the same caliber are equivalent in power. Sure one gun will produce a somewhat higher velocity with the same load than others, but the difference is rarely significant.
There are different cartridges that use the same bore diameter.
Consider the .30 caliber. There are 30 caliber cartridges that do well to throw a 110 grain bullet at 1900 feet per second and ohter .30 caliber cartridges that will launch a 165 grain bullet at over 3000 feet per second, and a wide variety of cartridges that produces velocities in between with different bullet weights.
And barrel length will make a great difference as well. For example a .357 Magnum revolver with a 6" barrel might launch a 158 grain bullet at around 1200 feet per second, but a 20" barrel might shoot the same bullet and powder charge at a velocity of around 2,000 feet per second.
Some high powered cartridges are more sensitive to barrel length than others. Some calibers will loose as much as 200 feet per second of velocity with every inch of barrel reduction below the optimum barrel length. As a rule of thumb when handgun barrels are reduced below standard length there is a velocity loss of about 75 fps per inch. For example if you are getting 1300 fps from a handgun with a six inch barrel, cutting the barrel to four inches will result in a velocity of around 1150 fps.
At the other end of the spectrum we have the .22 LR which reaches optimum velocity in a 16" barrel, in a 26" barrel the same loading will produce several hundred feet per second lower velocity.

hey are you ready to be like nazi germany and build a big wall around our country and go conquer everyone?
else by force because we are so lame thats all we got going for us id guns You know when you need a gun you need to back up and ask yourself why people are so opposed to you I mean what are we going to achieve we will keep anyone from taking over and dystroying america and the world by taking over the world and dystroying what makes america worth having that sounds so stupid AMERICA YOU FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM NOT THE LAND and certainly noone who wants safty starts a war PAALLLLEEESSSEEE WHAT IS THE POINT of dying to be safe?i don't think that works like that i think people who want safty come up with things like the olympics to settle their differences DO YOU DARE RUIN AMERICA !
Let me ask you this, do you like freedom? Do you enjoy being able to make most of your decisions? Do you like to even be on Yahoo! Ask and Answer?
I think you seriously need to rethink the idea of freedom and the whole point of "defense." This war in Iraq is not about offense and mass killing; in fact, it's about protecting the globe from a rising threat which we know today as terrorists.
And through that comes sad losses from both sides; but it's war and literally, no one can do ANYTHING about them, regardless if they are innocent or not.
Let me ask you another question, would you prefer doing something about these terrorist actions now or wait till hundreds of busses and shops here in the U.S. began to explode? Terrorists are NOT negotiators; if they find a chance to terrorize people, they'll do it!
Just remember that the point in dying to be safe, is to protect one of the only countries that harbors freedom, justice, and truth. Though it may not always seem that way when broadcasted through the media, the United States has a lot more good than bad.
I suggest you consider these thoughts and at least try to be a bit more patriotic. As the old saying goes, "United we stand; divided we fall."
