Wall Safe Outlet Is it safe to use an outlet converter that converts 2-prong to 2-prong w/ ground?
The room in my apt. comes with wall outlets that do not have a ground hole in them. I saw something at WalMart that converts them into outlets with grounds. It is just something that plugs into the 2-prong and you plug the grounded device into that.
I was wondering if it would be safe if I am going to be using a grounded surge protector with this converter. Will the ground actually be functional? If not, is this unsafe?
It's not particularly dangerous if the equipment is in good order, but if the equipment fails and shorts out there could be a problem. Shock hazards could exist at that time. I haven't seen an electrical box yet that was grounded that didn't have ground, 3-pin, plugs. If it only has the 2 blade type plug there is almost certainly no ground wire provided. Your apt. building must be very old. Nothing even half-way modern would be built without a grounded electrical system. Surge protectors depend on a ground. Without the ground they do not work. You need to know that the surge protector is in fact grounded to an adequate conductor if you want it to work correctly.

Multiple Surge-Protectors in one room, Safe limit on 120v wall outlets.?
I have a high end computer and sound system plugged into a surge protector in my room. I also have a 32" Samsung 1080p LCD HDTV with multiple gaming systems spread across 2 other wall outlets (3 plugs) Would it be safe to buy another surge protector for the entertainment center (Including: TV, PS3, Xbox 360) or would I be risking some sort of electrical over-load to the room having the 2 surge-protectors running all these electronics.
The surge-protectors are not changing the load on the circuit other than possibly drawing a small amount of (phantom) power depending on the model. What you need to determine is what the peak load is on the circuit. Not just in that room but all lights & outlets on the circuit. If you don't know what outlets & lights are on the circuit you can turn it off at the breaker and see what is effected. (This is pretty safe but if you are uncomfortable don't mess with it)
For electrical devices you should be able to find the peak amperage draw in their manual. For lights or devices that do not have the amp load listed use the following formula Watts / 110 = Amps. Your circuit is probably a 15A but could be a 20A. If everything on the circuit is below the 15 or 20 it is rated for then you are ok and the surge-protectors will help prevent surges.
The main problem with power strips is they make it easy to overload the actual circuit.
If you are not comfortable checking this yourself, a licensed electrician really is worth the cost and can offer solutions if needed.
