Wall Safe Receptacle
Wiring a receptacle 10 pts.?
I am wiring up a house after a fire. It had a 240 volt switch (wired from two separate breakers) on the wall that ran to a receptacle below the sink to turn on a garbage disposal. Now they want 120 volt garbage disposal dedicated to the switch and another plug to hook up a dishwasher. I was going to just break the center tab on the receptacle and wire the top side to go to the switch for the garbage disposal and the bottom side to go to the dishwasher. Only problem is I only have one neutral wire running down to that receptacle. Is it legal for me to just have the one neutral connected for both circuits in one receptacle? Will it be safe? As long as you keep it on the double pole breaker, you are allowed to have a "shared neutral". Legally, You HAVE to keep it tied to the double pole breaker. Not because it's a shared neutral, but because both feeds are tied to a device that is on the same "yoke". (The piece of metal that the duplex receptacle is on.) Just don't break off that little piece of metal that ties the top and bottom screw together on the neutral side.

Is it ok to use UL listed electrical tape around a power outlet for insulation?
I purchase some foam seals to go between the outlet plates and the receptacles. The problem is that after screwing them down there is still a small open gap sometimes (the plates wont go all the way flush to the wall with the seals in place). I started using electrical tape around the edges of the hole in the drywall to help seal it better before placing the seals & plates. Is this safe? Is there any chance the tape could catch fire from the outlet?
There is no danger in using electrical tape anywhere on an electrical device. In fact, it is now minimum code to wrap the receptacle or switch around the entire device with electrical tape after wiring it. I do like the other poster with 40 years experience and his idea to use caulking...Also, there are over sized outlet and switch covers available for interior use that will probably fix this as well...If there were a problem with the outlet that would produce enough heat to start a fire, it won't matter much what you use if the circuit breaker doesn't trip like it is supposed to...
