Is refrigerant(R-22, Puron) safe?
I became very intereted in the heating and air equipment after we got new furnaces and heat pumps installed. The new A/C uses Puron instead of R-22. The manufacturer of Puron says it is non-toxic, but when reading the safety data sheet of the Puron, I feel like it is not 100 percent safe. In high concetration, it could kill people and create tumor, too. Okay, if so, in our residential A/C application, if there is a leak(I don't know where, and let's say all 4lbs of Puron has leaked), what could be the problem? Usually, A/C 4 Ton system carries about 10 lbs of Puron. It could leak inside the wall or in the attic or, the evaporator could leak. Is there any safety mechanism for this incident?
As far as refrigerant coolants are concerned it is the safest, vs. Freon or Amonia.. I'm not saying go drink it because it is not good for you. I would not bath in it, or drink it but I would use it for A/C. Other refrigerants such as Amonia have deadly vapors yet people still use it because of cost.
