How do you get a ceiling fan to be able to plug into a wall socket?
I have a basic ceiling fan and a new home, not new construction but new to me. The problem is when we had our electrician friend come over to install our other ceiling fans we discovered thre was no power source to the ceilings. Needless to say he installed power to most of the ceilings but to get to the attic in the master bedroom would take an act of God. (which we don't have the time or money for at this time) I wanted to know if there was a way to connect a power cord to the fan and swag it across the ceiling to a power outlet in the wall. Do such things exist? If they do where can I purchase them and how do I get it to work with the fan that I have already, or do I need to purcahse a special model? HELP!
It can be done, and without too much difficulty. Fans are heavy, and must be suspended from a ceiling joist. You can use a stud finder (about $10) to find one in the vicinity of where you want the fan. Get a steel box of a size to which the fan can be attached; it will have knockouts, and knock out one of the small ones on a side. Get an appropriate power cord and a fitting to secure the cord in the knockout. (Fittings for non-metallic cable are what you want for this.) Install the fitting, attach the box securely to the ceiling, and string the cord from the box to an appropriate wall outlet. Put a few hooks in the ceiling to help support the cord. Connect the fan wires to the cord, and hang the fan. You're done.
You need to devise a way to blast your way into the attic. You may be able to cut a hole in the ceiling in a closet or in the hall; you can trim up the opening so that it looks nice. My house had no such access, and I required one to fix an electrical problem; I wound up going through the light box on the kitchen ceiling. Once you have done so, you could re-do the fan to be a cleaner (and more code-worthy) installation.

Trying to wall socket a T3 TSNS
Is it safe to run too many electrical appliances from one wall socket?
At the moment I have about four appliances (some high drain) running from each of the four wall sockets in my rented flat. I'm worried that it may start a fire, damage my equipment, cause an electric shock or something else similarly undesirable.
Or perhaps less seriously it may mean that the appliances are not getting enough power and are therefore running at a lower capacity?
What can I do/buy?
There are a number of different questions here. You should not try to draw more than 13 amps from a single wall socket, 20 amps from a ganged pair of wall sockets or 30 amps from the circuit as a whole. The fuses in the plugs give some protection but a 13 amp fuse tends not to blow until you're drawing about 25 amps.
You need to work out approximately how many amps each appliance uses. Divide the power in watts by the voltage, so a computer with a 400 watt power supply at 240 volts draws 1.667 amps. You can safely use a 4 way or 6 way socket on a trailing lead provided the total going coming from a single wall socket is not more than 13 amps (3,120 watts). However if you have two multiway sockets on trailing leads going into a double wall socket, the total between the two should not exceed 20 amps (4,800 watts).
If your flat has only one circuit for power sockets (only one circuit breaker or fuse) your total use should not exceed 30 amps (7,200 watts). Mind you, if you are using more than that, your flat is probably uncomfortably hot.
2 way and 3 way adaptors that plug directly into a 13 amp socket are not a good idea. The weight of the adaptor and all the plugs is supported by a phosphor bronze clip inside the socket that's simply not designed for the job.

Hi, I am a mum of 2 (a 5 yr old son and a 7 month old son) and I just found your blog. I am over in the U.K., but we live on a farm and had mice a few years ago and like you've said, we tried the poison and the traps without any luck, then we got one of those electronic rodent repellers that you plug into the wall socket, they are safe and use high pitched sound frequencies that are not heard by humans and drives mice crazy, thus leaving your house. We have had these now for 2+ yrs and not had any mice since…worth a try if you can get one in the U.S. Jess
you could of course go down to walmart and buy a power inverter. these are commonly available to power someones laptop in the car. the smaller ones just plug up to the cigarette lighter and then you plug in your regular house charger.
That is not nearly so educational as winding your own transformer, but it sure is easier.
