best tips for weather proofing your home?
We just bought a house in the summer and live in Maine, where winters are brutal. I used the shrink film insulation kit and thick curtains, door drafts ect. Our house only has one heating method: kerosene monitor which kerosene is more $$ compared to oil but burns more efficient. We also have a portable heater that sometimes seems unsafe. What else can I be doing to keep our house warm? Also, is there a quick method to check if your house is well insulated? Please only answer if you've had experience with cold weather...
I myself inspect everything. I walk around my home and look for holes especially around my outlets, faucet, gas meter, where my cable cord comes into the home and where the electrical comes into the home. I also inspect my windows to see if they need to be caulked and or plastic put on.(Inside and out) I also inspect where the house joins the foundation for air leaks you will be surprised as to how much air comes in from that area alone. Inspect inside and out in that area. I also inspect around my dryer vent basement windows and the water pipes(inside the house) that lead to the street. I also inspect around the plumbing pipes under the kitchen sink and bathroom sink for air leaks. I also purchase light switch and plug in insulators. Easy job and you will be surprised as to much air comes in from the switches and plug in areas. Check your attic to see if insulation is up there. If that area is well insulated I am sure the rest of your home is well insulated.Hope this helps.

Home remodel what do I do first?
We purchased a house and we need to make some upgrades.
My daughters room has old windows that blow cold air into her room. They are currently covered in plastic for the winter. Well one of my first things on my list of home improvements is her windows. I also wanted to remove the old vinyl siding, put up new weather proofing foam & re-side it with concrete siding.
Is it easier to do the windows first then siding or the other way around?
Another upgrade is the basement. I want to finish it. But during the summer the pipes sweat causing moisture I understand a dehumidifier would help but how can I tell where the moisture is coming from? What do I look for. I don't see obvious water damage on the walls?? And I don't want to hang dry wall and in a few months notice mold!

If you are having one company do both the siding and windows, they can do both projects at the same time.
If you are doing them first, I would do windows first. If you do them first, it won't be a big deal if you run into windows that are odd sizes and have to either size down or up. (This would cause you to either make a bigger hole for the window or cover part of the hole.)
Basements are natural moisture zones. A basement humidifier is a must! If you have a drain in the basement, the best thing is to run a hose from the humidifier to the drain so you don't have to worry about emptying the collection bucket.
I would put the humidifier in and see if that helps the pipe sweat issue before you put drywall up.

This is like a MAC, in that it also doesn't have windows.
Mice are allergic to Peppermint Oil, and avoid it. This oil can be found at most drug stores. Soak several cotton balls with the oil and put several in your cabinets where you find mouse droppings. Keep this up for several weeks and they wont be able to stand to stay in your house, and go to somebody Else's house!
