Working Old Style
old style butane torches?
My church puts on an Easter play about the life of Jesus and I was wondering if anyone knew were I could find old style torches that would work with that time period that would run off of butane or something like that. Thanks.

You should get a book on Scene Design and Stage Lighting by W. Craig Wolf, W. Oren (Wilford Oren) Parker, Harvey Kennedy Smith - Performing Arts - 1990 -
as to see how one can replicate such lighting effects with safety!
You can locate replicas of such lamps in many ceramic shops, a good light source are those new "LED" flashlight type units. You can also locate round ones about the size of a small biscuit that provide a soft light. These are usually called accent or portrait lights and are "stick on" models.
Talk to any high school or college theatre director and they will assist. You may have a local community theatre group in your area.
Fire Codes do not allow for such as any oil lamp and likely prohibit such as butane -even if safely done-

Getting a "flicker" effect is not hard for a larger lamp, but for a small one on a table one could be as simple as a feather over the light and then one needs to direct a battery powered fan to the source. But this will take too long to explain but I suspect most of the stage books will help you.

Doing some work on old style land line phone system?
For my parents everything seems to run on the red and green wires ,but can anyone tell me what the yellow and black pair are for ? I thought at first one might be a ground,but a seperate pair?could they be reserved for a second line,? Thanks Rich
These days on regular home wiring the yellow/black pair is most often used for a second line, but there are other applications. For example, if you had a DSL filter fitted at your network interface you might then use the red/green pair for the filtered line to voice jacks and the yellow/black pair as the unfiltered line for your DSL modem (or vice versa).
Other uses were quite common in the past. Remember the Princess phones which had a dial light? The yellow/black pair was used to provide power for those lights from a transformer which could be hidden away in a closet or some other convenient location.
Many phones on party lines in the past also needed a local ground connection for the bell, and this was usually done via the yellow wire. In fact at one time the old 500 rotary phones were fitted with a 3-core cord which just had red, green, and yellow wires, no black.
